Crucial Conversation Before Heading to College

With my oldest daughter graduating from high school, we have been busy with graduation celebrations, planning for freshman orientation, and making lists to prepare for life in a College dorm room.  It has also been an opportunity to discuss finances together and set expectations for life beyond high school.  Here are some key topics for your conversation:

The Consistency of Inconsistency, and How to Adapt Your Financial Goals

Carl Richards, Director of Investor Education for the BAM Alliance, posted an article in the New York Times about the illusion of certainty in investing. For many people, technology has led them to believe that they can predict what the market is going to do or that anyone can be a "market expert". Unfortunately, there is a lot of noise about the markets and it can be extremely difficult to sort through all of the information. Mr. Richards states, "Change and uncertainty are consistent in their inconsistency". This may not be an easy or comfortable reality and it can be of great importance to have the right financial advisor to guide you through this noise while maintaining a long-term view.

Are You Chasing Success or Happiness?

In a current society that is as fast paced as ever, people often wonder which came first; success or happiness? The real problem is determining what makes us truly happy and remembering to value that the most. Carl Richards asks us to really think about the people we know who are successful, and then think of those that are happy. Are they the same person? Most of the time they aren’t. So what makes these 2 individuals so different?

Carl Richards is the Director of Investor Education for the BAM Alliance.

For the next few minutes, I want you to focus on the most successful person you know (and yes, it may be you). What makes this individual successful in your mind? Professional accomplishments? Personal wealth? Now, I want you to think of the happiest person you know.

Did you come up with the same name?

No doubt some of you did. However, I suspect many more of you ended up with two different people. We often ignore it, but we live in a world that doesn’t always make it easy for success and happiness to coexist. My sense is that the problem comes back to something fairly basic.

Are you stuck in a 9 to 5 world?

I just returned inspired and appreciative from the annual BAM Alliance conference in St. Louis. I continue to be impressed with the investment and wealth management resources that are available to Flourish Wealth Management by partnering with the BAM Alliance. The Conference also provided a rewarding opportunity to connect with the 140 plus independent firms that are members of the BAM Alliance.

It is hard to believe that it has already been 5 months since forming Flourish Wealth Management.  Each day I am thankful for the opportunity to pursue my passion for wealth management and am energized by my conversations with clients about helping them achieve life goals.  The firm continues to grow through a combination of previous clients and new client relationships who appreciate our focus on delivering individualized wealth management solutions aligning financial resources with values and goals.

Reflecting the growth of the firm, I am excited to announce that Flourish has hired Elise Pederson as Wealth Manager to work with me to provide dedicated client service for our clients. I knew Elise was the perfect addition to Flourish from our first meeting.  She has a strong background in financial planning and a caring personality.  Elise joined Flourish with previous financial planning experience at a local firm, and she has a degree in Finance and Marketing from Iowa State University.  Elise embraces the collaborative, client-centered environment and experience that Flourish brings to each client relationship.

Due to COVID-19, we have begun taking client meetings via Zoom. Please see our instructions below on how to use Zoom and what you can do to protect your privacy while using this technology.
